Since the year 2008 ICAO require a language test in Swedish and/or English for those who have radio certificate and refers to the use of the radio (except in the case of gliding-, balloon-, ultra-light and technician certificate, these are excluded).

The Swedish and English test consists of 3 parts each and take about 20-25 minutes. The exam is oral and contains no written parts. It is a question of ordinary conversation and not so much connected to aviation radiotelephony skills.

If it is obvious to the examiner that the applicant have Swedish as their native language the test on Swedish is not necessary, and the controller can assign grade 6 (highest rating) directly.

NA4A has since year 2008 been approved as assessor in this test and are approved for highest level in both Swedish and English.
